Information, Advice & Guidance

Schools have a critical role to play in preparing young people for the next stage of their education or training and beyond. We set our expectations high as we want every one of our young people to realise their potential and have the career that they truly desire.

Of course we all know just how competitive the job market is and as importantly how quickly things change. To help our young people understand this and recognise their ambitions we use a number of effective techniques.

  • Every student from Y7 to Y11 receive detailed and regular Careers Guidance as they pass through the school. This takes the form of 1:1 interview, Tutor Group activities, visits to universities and local & regional employers and structured interviews at key transition points.
  • Every parent / carer is encouraged to take part in this through regular updates from the school on their child’s thoughts and latest decision on what they want to do when they ‘grow up’.

We are working hard to improve the quality of the information and advice that we give to our young people through  the use of technology and by working with Connexions to personalise our approach for every student and their families.

EATHOOC IAG

  • Every student (and parent / carer) has access to KUDOS; an online guidance tool that suggests a range of careers based upon questionnaire. This is accessible via the School Portal at any time.
  • Careers Club. Mrs Lilley, our Student Guidance Officer, runs a club at lunchtime in which she helps our students with career choice, career information, Curriculum Vitae and application letters.
  • At key points in a student’s time with us Connexions and Washington School offer interviews with the student and the parents. This is a very effective strategy as it builds and develops both the dialogue and trust between home and school as we help the young person make those all important study and career choices.
